Teeheehee.
I'm in school now. How very upsetting. Well at the very least I'm not actually DOING any work, which is more than I can say for dear Crystal, who is *COUGHCOUGHAHEMAHEM*hard*COUGHCOUGHHACKHACK* at work right now at BGS. Lance, meanwhile, is fast asleep on the scummy sofa in the LKC room.
It's been a good day, finally! We took advantage of the last day of the SMU-Menotti offer and had a pretty good meal at Menotti. And what a pleasant surprise it was that we didn't receive crap for service for once! Pretty decent tagliatelle and tiramisu for dessert, plus a very nice kir royale (bubbly with creme de cassis, or something) made me, in Crystal's own words, "very happy now".
Later on though we continued our day of lazing and eating and lazing and eating by heading on down for some mortinis. And for the first time ever at a bar, I got carded. Actually our whole table did. How very upsetting! In fact, this waiter-esque person nearly stopped us at the door lah, before another waitress-ish person waved us in. Well they've probably tired of people walking in an having one drink for two hours and then enjoying the very good (and free) sandwiches. Well not like I've not been guilty of it before, but we ordered two drinks each (which is pretty much the norm, I should think), and yet they gave us looks as though we were four cheapskate Singaporeans sharing 1 drink. All in all, the service we got, really, was pretty .. ahem.. mortifying, from that certain few people (manageress included).
I'm pretty sure though that it all boils down to two factors, 1. We're young, and 2. We're Chinese. Eating at restaurants annoys me a lot nowadays really, and it's just disgusting how Chinese Singaporeans are treated like second class citizens. It's the ol' colonial mindset debate creeping up again, and it utterly disgusts me. True, perhaps on the whole expats do spend more than Chinese youths at restaurants/bars/fashion boutiques/cafes/bookstores/art galleries/convenience stores, but that's hardly the point! How is it fair that an Asian man, dressed in exactly the same manner as a Caucasian man, can be turned away at the door of a restaurant when the latter would be welcomed in warmly? Service staff are there for a reason and that is as plain as their name makes it seem - to provide service, and good service at that. I'm hardly trying to say that Chinese are better than Caucasians or anything to that effect, but merely that we should be treated as equals as far as service is concerned.
Also, it's absurd that we should have to pay 10% service charge for something we didn't receive. The argument is that Singaporeans are cheap yadda yadda and wouldn't tip at all for the service, if service charge was abolished. Well then, if you don't even provide proper service to the Chinaman in your restaurant, how can you even EXPECT to be paid for it? Similarly, the ang moh guy's tipping you because he's generous, yes, but also because you served him well, duh! It's really a vicious cycle, yes?
Very annoying. What more, from one of the foremost restaurants in Singapore. Or perhaps I should say, BECAUSE it's one of the foremost restaurents in Singapore? Ok, rant ends here, don't want to start another racial riot between the readers of my blog. I've got like, three already, y'know.
Anyway, hidden very snugly in between the activities of the day was... well... a new experience. I got my eyebrows ... threaded. It's... painful. If you've seen me before you'd know that my eyebrows are reasonably bushy, and that the eyebrow hair is also reasonably thick. Which all makes for an extremely traumatic first experience threading. Well, at the expense of going into too much detail, my eyebrows are now very neat and shapely. I am, no doubt, well on my way to attracting more gay men with very very good taste, and also am headed in the direction of lance-culinity. That's well... not very manly. But no comment! Ok lah, it's actually pretty cool looking now, and I might actually do it again. Maybe I'll post a photo too, heh.
Anyway, this is a really long post, because I'm still waiting to be able to leave school!! We're going to have a reaaaaaaaaally good time tonight, and hopefully the police chase us while we're at it!
In the meantime, my all-time favourite riddle:
What's brown and sounds like a bell?
Ask me for the answer, preferably in person!
