sing-apall

on occasion, i buy the new paper to provide me with a "read" when travelling. today was one of those days, and the tabloid proved to be funnier than i'd expected. on page 27, there's a section entitled "What's Your Take?", which invited readers to sms their views on a given topic. the topic for the week, no doubt inspired by our good friend Balaji, was whether HIV-positive individuals who remain sexually active should be punished, and how often sexually active individuals should test themselves for HIV. most of the replies were downright hilarious, and also disheartening at the same time. i can only hope that the replies only reflect the kind of readership that TNP has, and not the general singaporean population. anyway here's a few excerpts, wholly unedited for your reading pleasure.

The "Why didn't I think of that?" Award

"Build buildings 4 ppl 2 hv sex, after sex, they go 2 the counter 2 hv their blood check 4 HIV, if found positive, fine them.." - aki

The Adolf Hitler Prize for Outstanding Leadership

"though this may sound reckless, the sexually active should be tested once a month, and should they be positive, print out their names and pictures in the newspaper and place em under house arrest" - MORBID ANGEL

The 'I don't really know what I'm talking about' Award

"better not punish the HIV people cause Singapore is not a cruel or communist country" - TRACEUR

The Angus Lors Prize for Best Singlish

"they want sex until they die, their problem lor. this system same like if take drugs... Does such system stops people from taking drugs?" - jo

and finally, my favourite, and a true classic:

The 'LoOk aT mE, i'M a kEwt aH LiaN!' Award

"CanT bLaMe thEm dUe 2 nEqLiqEncE... Fine tHem 4 pRevEntiOn.. B teSteD As oFteN aS thEy cAn.. AftEraLL tHey R huMans Like uS 2.." - FJmushee

[EDIT] here's a little post by some guy on his blog about the whole Balaji issue. outdated, yes i know, but well i just stumbled upon it. his writing is a little OTT sometimes, but overall, i think he made very strong points. the link's here.

on another note, for the first time ever in the history of the competition, we have a hot Miss Singapore/Universe! cheryl tay is hothothot, and apparently with brains to boot. finally, a worthy winner.

oh, i can't help but end off with another quote.

NTU Undergrad Ling Lee, responding to a question in the Q&A section asking her to choose her favourite cultural festival other than her own.

"Recial Harmony Day because when I was in secondary school, I had a lot of fun dressing up as an Indian."

a round of applause, please.
